Whatcha Readin': The Other Wes Moore

The Other Wes Moore By Wes Moore

Two young men with the same name. Remarkably similar backgrounds, incredibly divergent futures. One went on to become a Rhodes Scholar, Iraqi War veteren, and White House Fellow. The other Wes Moore was indicted with a life sentence for armed robbery. On the first page of this engrossing book, Moore illustrates his hope that these dual stories “will illuminate the crucial inflection points in every life, the sudden moments of decision where our paths diverge and our fates are sealed.” After meeting the other Wes, Moore surreally reflects on the value his own life and what he has to offer to others, he acknowledges all of the people who gave him a chance and grieves those who failed to do so for the other Wes. This book holds not just a valuable life message, but also serves as a resource guide to organizations spanning the nation, dedicated to aiding troubled youth. Pass this book on to a youth in need and think about the legacy you want to leave. This book is the 2011 pick by www.RSVPvolunteers.org.

NEW MUSIC TUESDAY: The Decemberists

The King Is Dead The Decemberists
The Decemberists are back with focused intentions, boiling their sound and recentering on a more defined point. No ten-minute rock operas here. A departure from their epic, theatrical album The Hazards of Love but not an unpleasant departure, Colin Meloy’s fantasy laden imagery are still present as he continues to kick up leaves in forgotten corners of our lexicon, employing words to great effect. The lyrics alone read like classic poetry, with instruments serving as icing on the cake. The King is Dead—the title being an homage to The Smiths' notable album The Queen is Dead—is an accessible, folk-style listen with Gillian Welch adding well-suited backing vocals, definitely at this album to your playlist. Review by Nicole Blackburn for Numéro Magazine.
Get it at Co-Op Records.
