Movie Monday: DATE NIGHT

This past week a friend and I went out for girl's night and we happened to see Date Night, where a couple take another couple's dinner reservation and it leads them on an adventure that they never bargained for. Let me say that the pairing of Tina Fey and Steve Carrell is a comedic match made in heaven. Their interactions as a 'been married forever' couple is believable, sweet and hilarious. We particularly enjoyed the antics between the two in the restaurant when they make up pretend conversations between other diners. This movie is definitely relatable to couples that feel that everyone's life is more exciting than their own, but then they come to appreciate that they really have a good thing going.

There were definitely parts where they could have pushed it a bit more for laughs but overall it had good humor. The car chase was priceless as was Carrell's annoyance at Mark Wahlberg's apparent lack of shirt. In the thick of it all Fey and Carrell's characters show that they do have some chops when it comes to getting to the bottom of things and taking on those that are out to get them. Several stars such as Mark Ruffalo and Kristin Wiig make amusing cameos.

So for all you couples out there this is a movie truly made for a great date night! And be sure to stay until the end of the credits, there are bonus outtakes!

REVIEW: Spoon + Transference

In my opinion it doesn't really matter what Britt Daniel is saying but I wanna listen, his cheeky purposive vocals are back in full force on this album. To be honest the songs didn't hook me like some of their past hits but "Got Nuffin" and "Written in Reverse" are well done, every instrument pounds to the beat, even the piano becomes like an added drum. In those moments I hear the Spoon we've all come to know and love. Unlike Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Spoon seems to have pulled back just a bit. Spoon is best when brash and loose, this album to me is the gait after the run. One thing about this quartet is consistency and honesty, they have a great time playing their music and they don't rely on a lot of flash or electronica. You gotta love a gritty guitar. Overall pretty good album, also check out gems such as "Trouble Comes Running" and "The Mystery Zone" and the sweet slow song, "Good Night Laura".

REVIEW: Blind Pilot + Three Rounds and a Sound

This album almost made it into Numéro, but it proved hard to track down and we didn’t snag it before the print deadline. Now we get to give away this mellow gem to you good readers of our blog. Blind Pilot is a Portland based band that travels to many a gig via bicycle. Their tracks ramble along, easy listening, I’ve often used this album as background music when I’m working. It’s the little lyrical moments that really hooked me on this, “Oviedo” has some really detailed imagery. I always liked the line “your breathe was courage laced with alcohol, you leaned in and said 'make music with the chatter in here and whisper all the notes in my ears'”. “One Red Thread” will have your toe tapping along with “Go On, Say It”, and the title track is a beautiful meditation on death. So if you are looking for a band with an honest sound, stripped of bells whistles, they are worth the listen. Blind Pilot may not be mind-blowing, but they are a soothing whisper in a sea of clanging cymbals.
