Catch Your Breath by Dina Emser

I rarely meet people these days who complain about having too much time on their hands. Rather, we are all racing around like crazies, looking at our watches, cursing the slow-moving traffic and the ubiquitous road construction, while wondering how we can do one more thing in the car while driving. We have taken multitasking to a whole new level!

I don’t know about you, but when I’m caught in that cycle, so busy moving from one task or appointment to the next, the thing that seems least possible is slowing down to catch my breath.

And yet the breath is a perfect example of a free and abundant resource. It is the one thing we cannot live without for any length of time, yet we rarely even notice it. In the mad rush it may sometimes feel like you hardly take time to breathe at all. The breath comes in high in your chest and stays very shallow. Breathing is one of the only systems in the human body that can be controlled both consciously and unconsciously. Fortunately you don’t have to think in order to breathe—it happens automatically. And you can exist this way, but do you want to?

One alternative is to take time to catch your breath. Be purposeful about slowing down periodically and noticing the gift of the breath. For at least a few moments each day, pay attention to what you are doing, bringing your soft focus to the people who are near or the nature that is present or the scene that presents itself before you. Take the opportunity each day to single task. Doing one thing at a time can be challenging, especially if that one thing is not about accomplishing something. Yet it is a good practice for slowing the thought process, lowering stress and blood pressure, as well as creating a sense of ease and relaxation. Who couldn’t benefit from slowing down occasionally to breathe?

Seems children need this skill too. Experts agree that teaching children how to soothe themselves when they feel out of control, angry, or agitated gives them very practical life skills for coping with stress. No surprise here that deep breathing techniques are highly recommended. How about this mantra for children and adults?

Take a deep breath.
Count to 5.
Until you're calm, calm inside.

Wow, who knew that the act of simply breathing could be so powerful? When you slow down sometime during each day and focus on breathing and single tasking, chances are you may notice something, or someone, you’ve been overlooking. You may be moving about in an unconscious fog and while you can get some things done from this place, the price can be high!

So take a moment now to catch your breath. No one will notice. You’re just reading anyway. Take a deep breath in. Breathe out. Now breathe in, holding your breath for a few seconds before releasing it. Breathe all of it out.

Great catch! In this moment, all is well.

Stay Healthy this Holiday with Preckshot!!

Dear Numéro Family of Readers, Preckshot Professional Pharmacy knows that in the US, sinus problems are the #1 reason that people see a doctor.

Preckshot recommends Neti! This is a gentle, safe, efficient way to deliver a good cleansing dose of saline to the nose. People practice Neti on a daily basis to help keep their sinuses clean and to make their breathing easier and more free.

Many health practitioners consider the nasal passages to be the doorwar for most diseases. A simple yet powerful technique, neti works wonders for chronic sinusitis, and allergies. It has a remarkable effect on upper respiratory tract infections, especially hay fever.

Neti pot is a cute little pot with a long snout which can be used to give a sinus rinse. You simply tilt your head forward and to one side, stick the snout of the neti pot into one nostrilm and tilt the pot upwards, until water flows into the nasal passage and out the other nostril. The neti pot is good for relief from sinus problems, like chronic sinus infection, dryness, sinus pressure, nasal allergies and even snoring.

Preckshot Product Summary Breath Again Essential Oil Roll-On is a proprietary blend of oils specially formulated to support respiratory health. Breathe Again contains four powerful eucalyptus oils: Eucalyptus Staigeriana, Eucalyptus globulous, Eucalyptus radiata, and Young Living's original Ecuador single, Eucalyptus blue. Ideal for invigorating the senses, Breathe Again is Young Living's all-natural answer to fighting the congestion that accompanies winter sniffles.

Primary Benefits
  • Eucalyptus essential oils soothe respiratory function.
  • Essential Oil helps support proper immune system function.

NEW MUSIC TUESDAY: The Hush Sound

Goodbye Blues by The Hush Sound

The Hush Sound is still a relatively unknown name in the world of music but their swanky pop sensibility should continue to inspire listeners and fellow musicians alike. Lead singer Greta Salpeter's soaring voice and jangly, jazzy piano stylings are a charming breath of fresh air in the current, ever somber musical atmosphere. Goodbye blues, indeed. Words of Inspiration from Dina Emser

Could be good, could be bad...

Have you heard the one about the woman who was driving down the road minding her own business when she encounters a driver coming towards her, arms reaching out the window, fists shaking. As she gets nearer, she hears him yell in her direction the word, “Cow!” Naturally she feels quite indignant. How dare he? What has she done to deserve that?! She continues down the road, fuming a bit and muttering to herself about the rudeness of drivers these days, when what does she encounter but a small herd of cows leisurely crossing the road in front of her. Ahhh… now she understands. In that moment, her thoughts, beliefs, and feelings all changed. Before she sees the cows, it’s all about her rightness and his wrongness. She feels indignant, angry, disbelieving, and irritated. After she sees the cows and understands the man’s warning, she feels grateful, a bit embarrassed, even humble.

There are all kinds of events in our development as people, moments in time that are marked with our memories of life before the event and after. Some are milestones like first paycheck, first kiss, passing the driver’s license test, getting your first medal, saying “I Do,” and the birth of your first child. We have a recognition that what just happened is big! Life will never be the same again. And these important moments can have a pretty big build up; the preparation we must make in order to do the things that impact the course of our lives. We have some control of the build up that gets us ready and we also have choices about where to show up to have the experiences.

But some things just happen and we don’t get a chance to “build up.” Bombs drop, literally and figuratively, and something comes that we aren’t a bit prepared for. Words get spoken or actions occur that change everything.

Sometimes we wish hard for life to return to the way it was Before But instead, we are faced with living in the After.

So have you heard the one about the farmer whose horse ran away? His neighbors came running into his yard asking him how in the world he was going to plant his crop without his horse? The farmer simply replied, “Could be good. Could be bad.” The next day the farmer awoke to the sound of horses, and he saw that not only had his horse returned, he had brought several friends with him. Now the farmer had several horses to make the job of planting much easier.

Later that summer, the farmer’s son was working in the hayloft of the barn when he slipped, fell, and broke his leg. All of the farmer’s neighbors again came running to see how the son was feeling, asking the farmer, “How in the world are you going to get your crop harvested without the help of your son? What will you do?” The farmer calmly replied,” Could be good. Could be bad.” The farmer worked very hard, rising early in the morning and retiring late at night to harvest his crop while his son lie mending.

During that time, the civil war started. All of the boys of a certain age in the surrounding countryside were called to duty. His son, however, could not answer the call due to his broken leg. Many of those boys never returned home.

When you think of it, each moment is filled with potential beforeness and afterness. We never really know what is going to happen, and yet, we move through our lives.

What kinds of evidence do you more often look for—
could be good, or could be bad?

CD of the Month: Iron & Wine

Around the Well by Iron & Wine

From Indie-Folk legend Sam Beam, better known by the moniker Iron & Wine, comes Around the Well, a two-disc, 24-track collection of rare and never-before released songs. This album is a great sampling of Beam’s genius as a songwriter, and of the range displayed on earlier albums from The Creek Drank the Cradle to The Shepherd’s Dog, with plenty of Beam’s famous lo-fi hushed vocals, meandering guitar, and plucky banjo, but also with several tracks of multiple layers of vocals, piano, percussion, and electronic effects. And as always, there’s no dearth of Beam’s searching, Southern-inspired imagery in the always intensely poetic lyrics. Somehow mournful and joyous all at once, Iron & Wine’s Around the Well is haunting and altogether unforgettable. Review by Rachel Delph, Numéro Intern.
